When transitioning into tech, it’s advised to ask questions, enquire from those who were there before you. In this article I’d be sharing the important lessons I deduced from Yawande Odumosu's (An Angel Investor and Founder of Start-up Plug) webinar on “Designing a Tech career road map and how I intend to use them.

Lessons learnt from the "Designing a Tech Career Roadmap" webinar.

• Skills are transferable: No knowledge is a waste and as such, knowledge acquired from our various industries come in handy and can be used. One would be suprised that previously learnt skills can relevant in various Tech space. Therefore, we should not be in a hurry to dismiss or underestimate the skills we already have when transitioning into Tech.

• Tech Careers do not have to be linear: Tech career road doesn’t have to be straight or follow a sequential route. There’s no rule of thumb that a Tech career roadmap should be linear, we all should find what works best for us and the best out of it. The results from a poll in Yewande's webinar showed that 67% of the attendees would likely have a non linear Tech career roadmap as well. • Self awareness: This can’t be over emphasized. It is very important to focus on yourself and evaluate yourself from time to time to know how your actions, emotions, decisions align with your internal standard. Will I standout as a data analyst or a product designer role? Why do i draw my motivation from? What are my likes and dislikes? Or should I just explore my options to see which one resonates with me? Am I happy with my growth so far? These are the pertinent questions one needs to ask before venturing into a Tech career path.

How I intend to apply these lessons.

• I have chosen to delve into the Data analysis track. I will keep an open mind, ask the right questions myself the right questions this would keep me on track and make me accountable to my set goal. Be accountable would place women in a self aware state and self awareness is one of the many lessons I learnt from Yawande Odumosu’s webinar

• By continually developing my transferable skills. As someone who has practiced dental technology extensively, and have taught in secondary and primary school, i have learnt to collect data, analyse and compute data in a way that whoever picks it up would understand my analysis and work without stressing. The ability to adapt in different situations and environment is also a skill that can be transferred in to my Tech Career.

• I am exploring my initial curiosity (Data analysis) I’m glad with what I’ve learnt so far and I’m still eager to learn more. I’m positive I’m doing what I love and what answers my previously asked questions. Yewande (2022) said "There is no right or wrong roadmap .
